Prazdroj Issues its Sustainable Development Report
12.9.2008 CompanyNominated for an international contest together with other nine businesses from the Czech Republic
Plzeňský Prazdroj publishes its regular Sustainable Development Report, having been one of the first businesses in the Czech Republic to start doing so three years ago. The report summarizes the key values on which the major Czech brewer and beer exporter prides. Its primary objectives include environmental protection, meeting the social obligations, care for the brewery’s legacy, and maintaining the high quality of its beer brands. Towards the end of August, Prazdroj was among the ten Czech businesses shortlisted for an international contest assessing corporate responsibility.
“Corporate responsibility is much debated and reflected, which in itself however brings no real value. That is why for three years already we have been presenting this Report which explains our view of corporate responsibility, demonstrating also practical examples of our actions in the area,” says Mike Short, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Plzeňský Prazdroj.
Prazdroj among the Ten Nominees
Towards the end of August, Plzeňský Prazdroj became one of the ten Czech businesses to compete for the best position in an international contest assessing corporate responsibility. The shortlist was the decision of the European Corporate Responsibility Award jury, which consisted of the Czech Minister for human rights and ethnic minorities Džamila Stehlíková, Olympic champion Imrich Bugár, professor of public and social policies at the Sociological Studies Institute of the Faculty of Social Science of Charles University Martin Potůček, and the Executive Director of the Czech Donors Forum Pavlína Kalousová. Details of the contest are available at http://www.mc-triton.cz/csr2008.
Three pillars of corporate responsibility
The Report contains seven chapters which together make up the three pillars of corporate responsibility – economic, social, and environmental commitments. The purpose of advocating the promotion of responsible drinking (1) is to prevent possible negative personal and social impacts of excessive alcohol consumption. Prazdroj thus adheres to the uniform approach of the SABMiller group as a responsible manufacturer of alcoholic beverages. In the chapter dedicated to environmental protection, the Plzeňský Prazdroj breweries declare their environmental management processes (2) by which they comply with the ISO 14001 standards. The other chapters are dedicated to the care for the historical legacy of the brewery (3), respect for human rights, support to community development, and transparency in its business.
One of the social projects is the “Prazdroj to People” scheme (formerly the Citizens Choice), which has been successfully implemented since 2002. It’s aimed at fostering the development in the regions where the three breweries are based. In the past six years the programme managed to distribute over CZK 42 million among more than 194 projects.
