140 Kozel Beers and Band “Divokej Bill” Will Be Stars for This Year’s “Billy-Goat’s Day”

The 22nd annual traditional beer festival “Billy-goats’ Day,” celebrating the 140th anniversary of the establishing of the brewery will take place in Velké Popovice brewery on Saturday, June 14 starting at 11:00 am. Visitors will be rewarded with beer specialties – unfiltered lager, a traditional meal as it was made 140 years ago, and a rich music programme. Popular band Divokej Bill will be the start of the Billy-goat’s Day celebration. The bands Patrola Šlapeto presenting old Prague songs, Sto zvířat, and Děda Mládek Illegal Band will also contribute to the period entertainment.  Entrance to the event is free.

Several accompanying events are being prepared to celebrate this year’s 140thanniversary of the brewery’s birth during the Billy-goat’s Day. More about it from marketing manager of the Velkopopovický Kozel brand Karel Kraus: “The main theme of this year’s Billy-goat’s Day is the 140th anniversary of its birth. Visitors may look forward to historic Billy-goat’s News, they can take a historic steam engine train going from Benešov and from Prague to Stránčice. We also decided to invite to the brewery those people whose last name is Kozel or Kozlová (female version of Kozel) who will toast with us with our beer special from the 140 l beer barrel. I am sure we will be able to get at least a symbolic 140 of them. We will soon announce on our web and on Facebook how they can apply, what will be their role during the celebrations, and all other details.”

Velké Popovice master brewers will prepare a beer speciality for this year’s celebrations – unfiltered lager. The unfiltered lager from Kozel is known for the higher content of the brewer’s yeast and other ingredients coming from malt and hops. Unlike filtered beers, this one is murky and its taste is full and significant. The unfiltered lager will be available exclusively on the Billy-goat’s Day. Typical Czech cuisine and delicatessen food will accompany the exclusive beer.

The biggest music attraction of the 22nd annual Billy-goat’s Day is the band Divokej Bill. The good atmosphere will be supported by the bands Patrola Šlapeto with their old-Prague songs, Sto zvířat (100 animals), and Děda (grandpa) Mládek Illegal Band.

This year’s celebrations of Billy-goat’s Day will also include the celebration of good craftsmanship. Various craft-making will take place there during the day. Visitors will have a chance to learn about the history and present-day activities of the brewery and the art of Popovice master brewers during the tours available to them for the entire day.

Billy-goat’s Day will take place in the Velké Popovice brewery on Saturday, June 14 and admission is free.

Notes for editors:

• The first batch was brewed in Velké Popovice brewery on December 15, 1874. Just a year later, 18,000 hl of beer was brewed and sold there. Only a few additional years after that, the brewery was the third biggest in the country. The brewery is known especially for its dark, strong beers.
